Summary
Pineapples are type of tropical fruits that are very perishable, and it is necessary to keep it cool after harvest to maintain its freshness. Okinawan grown pineapple fruits are picked at fully matured conditions and the salable term is rather short. Tropical fruits like pineapples will develop many physiological disorders when exposed to low temperatures. Qualities of pineapples differ according to the species, growning conditions, geographical conditions, and etc. Because of these reasons, the storage tenperature of Okinawan grown pineapples are uncertain.HomePage
This study was carried out to find the suitable storage temperature of pineapple fruits(summer, autumn and winter crops).
To measure the respiration rate, pineapple were stored at 5 to 40 centigrade. Temperature and respiration rates were plotted to produce Arrhenius curves. After that, pineapple fruits were stored at three different temperatures to evaluate their qualities during storage.
The result showed that a low temperature storage is suitable for maintaining the quality of pineapples. In addition, the suitable storage temperature differs according to the harvest time. It was found that 5 centigrade for summer crops, 8 for autumn crops, and 10 for winter crops were the best storage temperature to keep their freshness. Keywords: pineapple, chilling-sensitive plants, low temperature strage, chilling injury, respiration rate
