Abstract
The vase life of carnation opened by Bud Anthesis Acceleration (BAA) treatrnent was shorter than intact carnation (Minakuchi et al. 2004). To investigate effects of light-dark cycle in BAA on the number of days to fully opening and qualities of the carnations, the carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus L., cv, Nora) were cut at stage 1, bud diameter of 15 mm, and treated with BAA solution containing 3% sucrose at 25oC. The bud cut carnations were exposed to different light-dark cycle, continuous light; 12h cycle, 12h-light followed by 12h-dark; 6h cycle, 6h-1ight followed by 6h-dark; 3h cycle, 3h-1ight followed by 3h-dark; continuous darkness.HomePage
The light-dark cycle did not have remarkable influence on the number of days to fully opening, flower size and color expression of petal and leaf. Vase life of the carnation exposed to continuous light was apparently shorter than that of intact one. The light-dark cycles of 6h and 12h extended the vase life: the vase life of the carnation exposed to 12h cycle lighting was significantly longer than that of intact one.
These results are suggested that 12h cycle lighting in BAA treatment is effective in extending the vase life of bud cut carnation as well as saving electricity.Keywords: carnation, Mother's day, Bud Anthesis Acceleration, Iight-dark cycle, vase life, the number of days to fully opening
